Get Your Images Organized

I’ve been asked from time to time how I organize my personal images. I thought there’s no better time than a new year to share how to organize your digital photographs!

When I first got my digital camera some years ago, I thought managing photographs would be so much easier. But at first things were a bit of a mess. I couldn’t figure out a way of organizing my images that made complete sense. And I took way more pictures than I did before when I had to pay for film. Not only that, but now my images stayed on my hard drive and I rarely printed them.

It took me a while, but I finally developed a system that worked for me. As we start a fresh new year of picture-taking, I thought it may be useful to some of my readers.

Organize folders by year and month

A simple, but brilliant, plan of attack I discovered by reading other people’s blog. When I first started saving digital images on my computer, I’d organize by event or topic. But soon you end up with miscellaneous images that get stuck in weird places and I still had a hard time find them. Now I organize by year, and within each year’s folder by month. I rarely have a hard time finding my images now.

Delete

I know, it’s hard to push that delete button. But I’ve gotten much better at it myself. If an image is blurry or if I just have 10 shots of the same basic image, I pick my favorites and delete the rest. That means more room on your hard drive and easier searching for that perfect photo when you don’t have to wade through a bunch of “missed” shots.

Display

If you love a picture, display it. There are so many creative ways to do so. Whether you frame it and hang it on the wall, tuck it on a bookshelf, or attach it to a string hung across your wall, there are so many options. Pinterest is a great source for finding those creative display ideas.

Create an Album

One of the great things about digital images is it makes creating albums so much easier than it used to be. Not only that, but the albums are printed like real books, taking up much less shelf space than bulky scrapbooks. Also, the books are usually backed up in an online account. So if your toddler takes a Sharpie to it, you can just purchase it again. All is not lost!

I’ve been using Blurb to create an annual photo book for the past four years. And this year I tried out Kodak Gallery to create one with a linen cover. I like taking the time once a year to create one album that contains all of my favorite images from the year. It’s simple and means I just sit down once a year to do this project.

The images in this post are from a Blurb book I created a few years ago. I’m eagerly awaiting the 2011 album!

How about you? Do you have any suggestions or resources for getting your images organized or off of your hard drive and displayed in some way?

Thank You

Another year photographing beautiful families and capturing special moments has come to and end. I want to extend a big “thank you” to all my clients. I hope those images will be keepsakes for many years to come!

I was also happy to grow another year as a photographer, stretching my skills to new levels. This year I also shot my first corporate head shots and my first wedding. I don’t currently advertise myself as a corporate or a wedding photographer, but those were great experiences I was thrilled to be part of.

I will taking a break for the month of December through at least January. I’m breaking in December to spend the holidays with my family and in January to revamp my business. I’m very excited about making some changes and overhauling some of my visual branding as well as how I do things behind the scenes. Stay tuned and I will keep you informed here as the changes are being made.

Thank you again for a wonderful year!

Troy | Senior Session

Troy’s mom connected with me after seeing Brian’s senior photos that were taken last autumn. I met up with Troy and the rest of his family at Rocks State Park on the most perfect November day you could imagine. They were wonderful sports as we traipsed around to three different locations within the park. It was great getting to know Troy, who will be graduating from high school next year. It was also an honor to not just capture Troy in this senior session, but also his brother and parents.

Congratulations on your last year of high school, Troy!

Perfect Summer Evening

It was an absolutely perfect August evening when I met Andy and Courtney for their family session. It was sunny and warm with no humidity; perfect conditions for pictures. And how adorable are these brothers? I have to say they were definitely the easiest couple of kids I’ve ever had the privilege to photograph! They were so obliging!

Enjoy this sampling of my favorite images from their session . . .

Violet

We’d scheduled our session for what ended up being the hottest day of the year thus far. So, we rescheduled for the next week. It ended up being pretty sweltering too but little Violet was a trooper. She loved being held by mommy and cuddling her stuffed toys. And how about those big beautiful eyes and chubby arms and legs?

Katy + Stephen

I was very honored to be part of Stephen and Katy’s happy day. Stephen is my husband’s cousin and I was at first hesitant to shoot their wedding since I’d never done one before. But as they shared their vision for their special day, I decided that I’d be a good fit.

I’m so glad I accepted their request! Their wedding was held at the beautiful Shelby Farm by a stream on a summer’s evening. Every detail was beautifully thought-out and they were surrounded by loved ones who celebrated their joy through smiles and tears.

Katy and Stephen, congratulations and enjoy you wedding session preview!

Father’s Day Surprise

It was such a delight to get the phone call to do a Father’s Day surprise session. Not to mention I got to photograph some of my favorite kids. Remember Little Monkey? He’s filled out so much in the past few months and gained a nice head of hair. Remember the birth of Anna? She’s now a spunky big girl who’s 1st birthday will soon be arriving.

Well, these kiddos are also cousins and it was a blast to get together to do a secretive session to surprise their grandpa with some framed pictures for Father’s Day.

We even got a few of just the “babies.”

This little girl was quite the clapper!

I never tire of close up portraits of babies. Look at Garrett’s stunning blue eyes!

I had so much fun, hope all the cousins did too!
